After Smoke
Confirm conditions, clean carefully, replace loaded filters and return to normal activity gradually.
Confirm that the hazard has changed
Do not rely on smell alone. Check AQI, local instructions, property access and visible ash before reopening the home or returning to normal activity.
- Ventilate only when outdoor air is clearly better.
- Inspect portable-air-cleaner and HVAC filters.
- Keep children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions away from ash cleanup.
- Avoid dry sweeping, leaf blowers, ordinary vacuums and shop vacuums around ash.
- Follow local hazardous-material guidance after structural fires.
Return gradually
Continue normal fluids, manageable meals, sleep and gentle movement. Increase outdoor activity only as conditions and symptoms allow.
- Wash bedding and frequently touched surfaces when appropriate.
- Restock filters, water, batteries and household supplies.
- Record what worked so the household plan improves.
Recovery is not detoxification
Traditional foods and routines may be used for familiarity and comfort. They are not described as removing wildfire particles from the lungs, blood, liver or kidneys.
